Outdoor oven

During May 2015 in a beautiful deciduous woodland area at Highgreen, The Travelling Hearth built an outdoor oven with the help of enthusiastic individuals.

People learnt about all aspects of oven building from constructing plinths and shelters, using green woodworking skills to selecting raw materials for the oven. This included mixing the cob through to the first oven firing and basic cooking skills. Homemade soup lunches were prepared on an open fire which made it a a truly outdoor experience for everyone.  On the final day members of Crossings visited and helped complete the oven after which there was a celebratory feast for everyone including local residents.

The funding from the Gillian Dickinson Trust made it possible to build the oven which will be a permanent feature and enable visiting groups to experience outdoor baking and sharing of food alongside art activity and exploring.
